The sentencing range of four to seven years imprisonment identified in R v Holland for grievous bodily harm deliberately inflicted by the use of a weapon by a mature offender with a record of personal violence applies to comparable offences of unlawful wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Where a serious violent offence declaration is made, the sentencing judge must still make proper allowance for mitigating factors in the head sentence, as the declaration removes the ability to reflect mitigation through parole eligibility.
