A sentence of 12 years imprisonment (concurrent on all counts) for doing grievous bodily harm with intent, where the offender was aged 30, pleaded guilty, and committed a sustained crime spree involving 14 counts of serious violence against multiple strangers while on probation, was at the top of the permissible range but not manifestly excessive. A late expression of remorse (three days before sentencing) may properly be rejected where psychiatric evidence indicates absence of remorse and empathy, and no earlier apology was attempted.
