A sentence of three and a half years imprisonment with parole eligibility after 14 months was upheld for unlawfully doing grievous bodily harm where two offenders attacked an intoxicated complainant (one holding him down while the other punched him), causing serious facial fractures and brain injury requiring intensive care, and then failed to seek medical assistance for almost six hours. The failure to render assistance was properly characterised as callous and treated as an aggravating factor. Court records incorrectly recording a sentence as partially suspended rather than with a parole eligibility date should be corrected, and the prospect of some delay to parole applications does not warrant substituting a different form of sentence.
