The gravity of defensive homicide depends to a considerable degree upon the strength of the circumstances said to give rise to the belief that self-defence was warranted, and there are degrees by which a belief may be unreasonable — from cases where the line is just barely crossed to cases where the belief is wholly unjustifiable. A sentence of 11 years with a 7-year non-parole period was upheld for a serious example of defensive homicide where the belief was wholly unjustifiable and grossly disproportionate force was used.
