The gravity of systematic sexual abuse of children over an extended period may justify a sentence that is effectively a life sentence for an elderly offender, notwithstanding the principle that crushing sentences should be avoided where possible. A guilty plea not motivated by remorse has limited mitigatory force. A differential in sentences between co-offenders is justified where one orchestrated and dominated the offending.
