The sentencing range for single offences of armed robbery in Western Australia is 4 to 6 years' imprisonment (not accounting for mitigating or aggravating factors). The totality principle does not preclude cumulative sentences for an inveterate armed robber, and total effective sentences of 7 to 10 years or more may be appropriate for multiple armed robbery offences. A sentencing judge is not bound to discount sentences for time spent in custody on charges where convictions were quashed and a retrial ordered but not proceeded with.
