Hardship to employees and businesses of an offender, without exceptional circumstances, does not justify suspension of an otherwise appropriate custodial sentence. The R v Edwards principle requiring exceptional circumstances applies to hardship to employees just as it does to hardship to family members. A subsequently stated explanation for a sentence ought not ordinarily be taken into account on appeal.
