Under s 19AB(1)(d) of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth), where aggregate sentences for federal offences exceed three years, the single non-parole period must commence from the date of the first sentence, not a later sentence. Remarks on Sentence should be read as a whole, and apparent inconsistencies in the statement of the mental element may be treated as laxity in expression rather than substantive error where the sentencing judge correctly directed the jury at trial. In money laundering cases, the wide range of criminality comprehended by the statutory provisions means that comparable sentences do not necessarily establish a sentencing range.
