The established sentencing range of six to seven years as a minimum head sentence for grievous bodily harm involving the use of a knife in a way that seriously threatens life, as set in R v Bryan, applies to unprovoked attacks in private homes as well as public settings. A five-year head sentence represents adequate moderation where the sentence is cumulative on an existing sentence, particularly where aggravating factors such as criminal history, high risk of reoffending, lack of remorse, and flight from the scene are present.
