The totality principle requires a sentencing judge to review the aggregate sentence and consider whether it is just and appropriate, but does not preclude cumulative sentences even where the offender is already serving a very lengthy term. Where cumulative sentences are a live issue, the sentencing judge must ensure the sentence is not disproportionate to overall criminality and does not stifle rehabilitation prospects. The seriousness of the offending may outweigh youth and rehabilitation in the assessment of whether cumulation is warranted.
