When a sentence for a new offence is ordered to be served cumulatively upon an activated suspended sentence, the sentencing judge must apply the totality principle by reviewing the aggregate sentence and considering whether it is just and appropriate. An early parole eligibility date does not necessarily cure a failure to apply the totality principle to the head sentence. The totality principle does not, however, require a reduction in every case.
