Possession of child pornography that is close to the worst category in terms of depravity will ordinarily attract an immediate custodial sentence. A total effective sentence of 1 year 6 months with a 9-month non-parole period was at the lower end of the range for offending involving approximately 1,171 images/movies depicting very young children subjected to penetration, sadism, bestiality and bondage. Matters in mitigation including guilty plea, depression, loss of relationship, cooperation, and good rehabilitation prospects, while warranting some leniency, do not displace the significant weight to be given to general deterrence.
