A trial judge in a jury negligence case is not required to direct the jury on the specific content of the duty of care (such as a duty to keep a proper lookout); the duty is to take reasonable care, and what that requires in the circumstances is a question of fact for the jury. Passages in appellate decisions describing what reasonable care required of a driver in particular factual circumstances (such as Manley v Alexander) are findings of fact, not statements of legal principle that must be put to a jury as directions of law.
