Even where psychiatric evidence establishes no direct causal nexus between a mental illness and offending, the diagnosis of a serious mental illness such as paranoid schizophrenia may still warrant a reduction in sentence due to decreased emphasis on general and specific deterrence. Fresh psychiatric evidence not available at sentencing can ground resentencing on appeal.
