A trial judge's duty to assist self-represented litigants extends to diminishing procedural disadvantages and explaining procedural options, but does not extend to advising on the adequacy of evidence, suggesting amendments to pleadings, or adjourning proceedings to permit re-pleading. Where further evidence sought to be relied upon does not support the pleaded case, no miscarriage of justice is occasioned by refusing leave to rely on it, even where the litigant is unrepresented.
