The totality principle, when applied to cumulative sentences, recognises that severity increases at a greater rate than the increase in sentence length, and that a discount is usually appropriate when a sentence is to be cumulative on sentences already being served. An effective head sentence of five years imprisonment (including 12 months cumulative on four years) for sexual offences by a teacher against a student was within the range of a sound exercise of the sentencing discretion where comparable cases involving more serious offending resulted in similar or lower sentences.
