The totality principle requires that when a trafficking sentence is to be served concurrently with an existing sentence for a separate offence, the court must consider whether the effective combined sentence is too harsh and crushing, and if so, moderate the trafficking sentence accordingly. An internally inconsistent statement of agreed facts regarding drug street values that leads the sentencing judge into error as to the scale of the trafficking operation is a ground for appellate intervention.
