An employer's encouragement or inducement to an employee to attend a social function at the workplace outside working hours does not, without more, render attendance at that function part of the course of employment for workers compensation purposes. The Hatzimanolis/PVYW principles concerning intervals within an overall period of work cannot be applied as a freestanding test to intervals between discrete periods of work. The scope of employment must be determined by objective characterisation of the employer's requirements and expectations, not by the employee's subjective belief about what was required.
