A trial judge is not required to give formal alibi directions in the terms suggested by the Bench Book where repeated and clear directions on the onus and standard of proof, including that the Crown must prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was present at the scene, adequately convey the substance of the alibi direction. The value of unchallenged alibi evidence may be severely diminished where the accused's own prior statements contradict that evidence.
