Where mitigating factors have been taken into account in the decision to impose a community correction order rather than a custodial sentence, those same factors do not necessarily require a reduction in the operative period of the order. The length of a community correction order may reflect rehabilitative needs and the seriousness of the offending. The parity principle or the broader principle of equal justice requires a sentencing judge to have some regard to a co-offender's sentence even where the charges differ significantly, but the weight to be given to that sentence depends on the nexus between the offenders, the degree of similarity of their conduct, and factors personal to each offender.
