A sentence of 42 months' imprisonment with release after 14 months for trafficking 688.8 grams pure methamphetamine (over 90% of the upper end of the marketable quantity range) is manifestly inadequate; 6 years with a 4-year non-parole period is appropriate having regard to comparable cases. Whether the more burdensome nature of imprisonment for a foreign national by reason of isolation from family can be taken into account as mitigation depends on whether duress operated to bring the offender to Australia; if the offender came voluntarily before any threat, isolation is not a relevant mitigating factor.
