The mitigating weight of the prospect of deportation in sentencing is reduced where the offender shares the language and culture of the country of imprisonment and will be deported to a country that is neither dangerous, hostile nor unknown. Where the prospect of deportation is raised during the plea and noted by the sentencing judge, an appellate court will infer that the well-known consequences of deportation were taken into account even without express articulation in the sentencing remarks.
