A trial judge assessing future treatment expenses may award a global sum including a buffer for contingencies where some items can be costed on the evidence but others cannot, and this approach is not inconsistent with separately costing identifiable items. A trial judge is entitled to prefer lay evidence from a family member providing care over more conservative expert assessments as to the level of domestic assistance required, provided reasons are given for doing so.
