The Verdins principles concerning moderation of general and specific deterrence (considerations 3 and 4) require a demonstrated connection between the offender's mental condition and the offending conduct; psychological damage from prolonged incarceration, without more, is insufficient to engage those considerations. A medical panel diagnosis of PTSD obtained in a personal injury context adds little to a detailed offence-specific psychological analysis already before the sentencing court. The approach of adjusting an individual sentence upwards to accommodate a separate sentence, rather than making orders for cumulation and concurrency, is novel and not the preferable approach under Grabovac, though it may not constitute appealable error where it was adopted in accordance with the appellant's own submissions and does not alter the practical outcome.
