For moral culpability to be reduced on account of mental disorder, there must be some link, direct or indirect, between the mental health issue and the offending — but the inquiry should not be approached in a highly technical way. By contrast, the weight to be afforded to general deterrence may be reduced on account of mental disorder whether or not there is a link between the condition and the offending. A sentencing judge's failure to refer expressly to the principle of reduced general deterrence does not establish error where the sentence is moderate and mental health was taken into account in other aspects of the sentencing exercise.
