The phrase 'without reasonable cause' in s 415(1) of the Criminal Code (Qld) extends to the detriment threatened in the course of making the demand, not merely to the subject matter of what is demanded. Accordingly, even where a demand is based on a genuine debt, making the demand with threats of unlawful violence or other criminal conduct means the demand is made 'without reasonable cause'. The question left open in R v Campbell has been resolved: the nature of the threats is relevant to the assessment of reasonable cause.
