Assistance to authorities that is instrumental in securing a co-accused's change of plea from not guilty to guilty constitutes assistance at a high level warranting a discount significantly above 10%. A sentencing judge faced with Crown submissions on the appropriate discount range (even if such submissions should not have been made under Barbaro) should be extremely reluctant to impose a more severe approach than that suggested by the Crown. The customary range for combined discounts for plea and assistance remains 25-50%, with a combined discount of 20% being at the very bottom of the range.
