Where a sentencing judge finds the criminality of two co-offenders' comparable offences to be roughly equivalent, the sentences imposed must reflect that finding; a lenient application of the totality principle to one co-offender's aggregate sentence can create an unjustifiable disparity with the sentence of another co-offender sentenced for a single offence. The parity principle applies to co-offenders in the same criminal enterprise regardless of the charges actually laid against them, including where co-offenders are charged with less serious offences carrying lower maximum penalties.
