Parity comparisons between co-offenders charged with different offences in the same criminal enterprise are permissible, but purely arithmetic comparisons of the ratio between sentences imposed and maximum sentences available are to be deprecated and do not support or negative a justifiable sense of grievance. The focus must be on whether the differential rationally reflects the differences between offences and offenders.
