The availability of alternative care arrangements (such as approved home care packages and residential respite care), even if declined by the dependant, may negate a claim that imprisonment of a carer constitutes exceptional hardship to family members sufficient to warrant reduction of actual custody. A substantial reduction in the period of actual custody may itself demonstrate that the sentencing judge gave appropriate weight to the carer's circumstances.
