A sentence of nine years' imprisonment for manslaughter by stabbing where the offender intended grievous bodily harm and provocation was minimal is within the appropriate range, and may even be at the lower end. The comparable range for manslaughter by deliberate stabbing is 9 to 12 years with discount for remorse and early plea. Hardship to the offender's dependent children does not warrant reduction of sentence for serious offences requiring substantial imprisonment.
