Under s 7(2)(a) of the Return to Work Act 2014 (SA), 'significant contributing cause' means an important or influential cause, determined by evaluative judgment considering all relevant facts and circumstances. There is no requirement that employment exposed the worker to a greater risk of injury than they would have faced outside employment. A 'but for' test may assist but cannot be the sole determinant. The second limb is intended to exclude claims where employment was merely the occasion for the injury rather than a cause in any real or meaningful sense.
