Where a co-offender who pleaded guilty receives a longer sentence than a co-offender found guilty after trial, and the disparity is not explained by differences in subjective cases, a justifiable sense of grievance arises. The utilitarian benefit of a guilty plea entered in the Local Court will generally exceed any discount for efficient conduct of a trial. When assessing whether a co-offender's sentence is manifestly inadequate, the head sentence and non-parole period may be assessed separately — a manifestly inadequate non-parole period does not necessarily render the head sentence manifestly inadequate.
