The principles governing liability for psychiatric harm to rescuers apply equally to police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other professional rescuers who suffer psychiatric injury in the course of their duties. A police officer's occupational status does not constitute a legal bar to recovery for pure psychiatric harm caused by a negligent driver, provided the usual requirements for rescuer liability are satisfied. Policy considerations relating to indeterminate liability, availability of employer liability, and insurance-dependent recovery do not preclude the duty of care.
