An Edwards direction is not required where the prosecution does not contend a lie is evidence of guilt and the trial judge gives an adequate direction against reasoning from lies to guilt. Defence counsel's deliberate forensic decision not to seek a direction is cogent evidence that no injustice was perceived and will make it difficult to establish miscarriage of justice on appeal. A pretext telephone call in which the accused makes generalised admissions of wrongdoing is admissible notwithstanding ambiguity as to the precise conduct admitted, where the ambiguity goes to weight rather than admissibility.
