A parole release date fixed after serving 44 per cent of the effective head sentence is not manifestly excessive for a recidivist drug offender who pleaded guilty but had an extensive criminal history, failed community-based orders, and absconded when charges were first listed for sentence. The one-third convention for guilty pleas is not an invariable rule.
