A sentencing judge may impose the same sentence on a co-offender who played a greater role in drug offending where that co-offender's assistance to authorities offsets the aggravating effect of the greater role. Medium-level assistance to authorities may justify a significant discount, but there is no standard or mechanical approach to quantifying the discount. The seven propositions summarised at [21] provide a convenient restatement of sentencing principles for drug importation and possession offences under the Criminal Code (Cth).
