A sentence of 3 years' imprisonment for aggravated grievous bodily harm (maximum 14 years) involving a sustained, unprovoked attack on a 73-year-old grandmother causing life-endangering injuries is manifestly inadequate. Sentences of 18 months' imprisonment for aggravated sexual penetration without consent (maximum 20 years) involving violent sexual assaults on a 17-year-old half-sister with threats to kill are manifestly inadequate. For offending of this nature and gravity, a total effective sentence of 12 years' imprisonment was appropriate after a 20% guilty plea discount.
