The principle that general deterrence is a very important sentencing consideration for violent offending against a former domestic partner following a relationship breakdown applies equally whether the perpetrator is male or female. Where an offender contends that prior family violence causally contributed to the offending, there must be evidence establishing that causal link; self-serving accounts and expert reports that accept the offender's account without independent corroboration are insufficient. The characterisation of offending as 'grievance-driven' in the Hogarth sense does not require an assertion of possession and control — anger at abandonment and hostility towards a new partner suffice.
