Cross-border firearms trafficking involving 87 semiautomatic handguns distributed to criminals, with only 5 recovered, warranted individual sentences of 4 years 6 months (out of a maximum of 10 years), a total effective sentence of 7 years 6 months, and a non-parole period of 5 years. Individual sentences of 3 years and a total effective sentence of 5 years 6 months were manifestly inadequate for offending of this seriousness. This appears to be the first intermediate appellate court decision on sentencing for offences under ss 360.2(1) and 360.3(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).
