A mental health disorder such as depression, even where it led to self-medication through drug use, cannot be regarded as causative of offences of possession of methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply. Immediate imprisonment remains the only appropriate sentencing option for serious drug offences, and matters personal to the offender will almost always be subsidiary to the major sentencing considerations of general and personal deterrence.
