Sentencing comparators for methylamphetamine trafficking offences decided before the Misuse of Drugs Amendment (Methylamphetamine Offences) Act 2017 (WA) increased the maximum penalty to life imprisonment are of limited utility, as the increase has given rise to higher sentences customarily imposed. A total effective sentence of 8 years imprisonment for multiple drug offences over several months, including two counts carrying life imprisonment, involving low to mid-level offending with a commercial purpose of extinguishing a drug debt, falls within the emerging sentencing range.
