The usual costs-follow-the-event rule does not readily apply to legal profession admission proceedings, and costs against applicants will be awarded sparingly given the Board's amicus curiae role. However, the court retains an unfettered discretion to award costs in the Board's favour where the applicant's default puts the Board to unnecessary expense in fulfilling its statutory role.
