When applying the totality principle to a sentence that is cumulative upon or overlaps with a previous sentence, the sentencing court must have regard to the actual time the offender spent in custody under the previous sentence, not the time the offender should have spent but for an administrative error. A sentencing court is not required to moderate a sentence on the false premise that the offender served a longer period in custody than was in fact the case.
