Where an offender commits offences while on parole and spends substantial time in pre-sentence custody, the totality principle can be adequately addressed by making sentences concurrent and taking pre-sentence custody into account without declaring it as time served. An offender's extensive criminal history attenuates the reasonable expectation of useful life after release, reducing the weight of the 'crushing sentence' consideration relative to deterrence, denunciation and punishment.
