The totality principle requires that orders for cumulation not exceed the level reasonably required to satisfy punitive and mitigatory sentencing objectives. Particular moderation is required for offences that do not involve physical violence against the complainant (such as firearms offences) and for offences committed as part of the same incident, even where the overall offending is extremely serious.
