A sentence of 14 years' imprisonment for possession of approximately 4 kg of methylamphetamine at 80-81% purity with intent to sell or supply is not manifestly excessive under the life imprisonment maximum introduced by the Misuse of Drugs Amendment (Methylamphetamine Offences) Act 2017 (WA). While such a sentence would have been at least high under the previous 25-year maximum, the disparity is explicable by Parliament's increased view of the gravity of the offence. Standards of sentencing for multi-kilogram methylamphetamine offences under the new maximum have not yet emerged.
