A sentencing judge is not required to find 'profound social deprivation' under Bugmy where the evidence of the offender's background is 'relatively limited'. Even where some childhood deprivation is accepted, it must be capable of 'explaining' the character of the offending to warrant a meaningful reduction in moral culpability — drug trafficking and reckless driving offences are not readily explained by childhood exposure to violence.
