For intentionally causing serious injury, sentences exceeding 10 years remain appropriate where injuries are life-threatening with permanent effects, the offender is a serious violent offender, and there are very few mitigating factors; however, for mid-range offending of intentionally causing injury involving relatively low-level physical injury, sentences approaching half the maximum penalty may be manifestly excessive even where the offender has a poor criminal record.
