6 Civil unions—general
(1)
A civil union is a legally recognised relationship entered into under this Act.
(2)
A civil union is different to a marriage but is to be treated for all purposes under territory law in the same way as a marriage.
Note 1
Marriage is defined in the Marriage Act 1961 (Cwlth), s 5 to mean the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.
Note 2
Territory law includes the common law (see Legislation Act, dict pt 1, def law).
